Is it worth spending more for free shipping?

Dealspoter Editorial

When a cart is a few dollars short of free shipping, compare the two checkout totals before adding something extra.

Start with the total for your current cart

Record the subtotal, shipping charge, and any discounts already applied. Check if shipping changes based on delivery method or address.

Price the smallest useful addition

For example, a $43 basket with $6 shipping costs $49 before tax. Adding an $8 item to reach a $50 free-shipping minimum brings the subtotal to $51. You would pay $2 more, so the extra item is worthwhile only if it is worth at least that much to you.

Check how codes affect eligibility

Some retailers calculate the free-shipping minimum after discounts. Try the code, confirm whether shipping was added back, and compare the final total with and without the code.

Consider the order you actually want

If an add-on is something you planned to buy later, compare its price with what you would normally pay. If it is a filler item, compare the shipping fee with a lower-cost delivery option or another retailer’s delivered price.
