Shopping Tips

An online shopping returns checklist

Dealspoter Editorial

It is easier to compare return terms before you buy. Check both the retailer’s policy and any conditions on the product listing.

Find when the return clock starts

Look for the last day to request a return and whether the store counts from the purchase, shipment, or delivery date. Note a separate ship-back deadline if the store lists one.

Check exclusions for your item

Read the rules for the exact item and seller. Clearance, personalized items, opened products, and marketplace listings can follow different terms. If you cannot tell which rule applies, look for a contact option on the retailer’s page.

Add up return costs

Check whether the return label is prepaid and whether the retailer deducts shipping or a restocking fee. Confirm if the refund goes back to the original payment method or comes as store credit.

Save what you need

Keep the order confirmation and the packaging until you know the item will work for you. If you start a return, save the label, tracking number, and confirmation until the refund is complete.

Compare policies when the prices are close

For shoes, electronics, or items you cannot try first, a clear return process can matter more than a small price difference.
